Coverage Formula:
Paint Needed (oz) = Total Surface Area (sq ft) / Coverage Rate (sq ft/oz) × Number of Coats
Vehicle surface area benchmarks:
- Compact car (e.g., Honda Civic): ~175–200 sq ft
- Mid-size sedan (e.g., Camry): ~200–230 sq ft
- Full-size truck (e.g., F-150): ~260–300 sq ft
- SUV/Minivan: ~240–280 sq ft

Standard coat counts:

The figures above are for un-reduced paint straight from the can. In practice base coat is thinned with reducer (often close to 1:1) before it sprays, so the ready-to-spray volume you actually load into the gun is roughly double the raw-paint number. This calculator skips the area math and works from typical ready-to-spray volumes by vehicle size, which is what you buy and mix.
Worked example — full repaint of a mid-size sedan (2 base + 2 clear): Base coat: 1.2 quarts per coat × 2 = 2.4 quarts Clear coat: 1.2 quarts per coat × 2 = 2.4 quarts Subtotal: 4.8 quarts, and with 15% for waste and overspray, about 5.5 quarts ready to spray. That reconciles with the raw-paint math above once you account for reduction.
Tips for accurate measurement:
- Multiply the square footage of each panel individually and sum them
- Doors, hood, roof, trunk lid, and quarter panels are the main areas
- Deep, dark colors (black, dark red) often require an extra base coat for uniform coverage
- Metallic and pearl finishes require careful flash time between coats — rushing causes mottling
