The spark plug gap is the distance between the center electrode and the ground electrode. This gap determines the size and strength of the spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. Getting the gap right is critical for efficient combustion, fuel economy, and engine performance.
Why Gap Size Matters
A spark must jump across the gap to ignite the mixture. Too small a gap produces a weak spark that may misfire under high compression or load. Too large a gap requires more voltage to jump, which can exceed the ignition system’s capability — also causing misfires.
Standard Gap Ranges
For conventional ignition systems:
- Standard passenger cars: 0.028–0.060 inches (0.7–1.5 mm)
- Most common: 0.040–0.044 inches (1.0–1.1 mm)
For high-energy electronic ignition systems (modern cars with coil-on-plug):
- 0.040–0.060 inches (1.0–1.5 mm)
- These systems generate higher voltage, so they can jump a larger gap
For turbocharged or forced induction engines:
- Gap is typically reduced to 0.028–0.035 inches (0.7–0.9 mm)
- High cylinder pressure resists spark jumping — smaller gap ensures reliable ignition
For performance/racing applications:
- Varies widely by application: 0.020–0.060 inches
- Adjustments are made based on specific tuning requirements
How to Measure and Adjust Gap
Use a feeler gauge to measure the current gap. To decrease gap, gently tap the ground electrode on a hard surface. To increase gap, use the hook on the feeler gauge tool to carefully pry the ground electrode outward. Never adjust the center electrode.
