Wiper Blade Information

Wiper blades are one of the most important safety items on a vehicle, yet one of the most neglected. Worn or wrong-sized wiper blades cause streaking, skipping, and poor visibility — all of which are dangerous in rain, snow, or fog.

How to Measure Your Wiper Blades

If you don’t know your wiper sizes, measure them directly:

  1. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the raised position
  2. Measure the full length of the rubber blade (not the arm) from tip to tip
  3. Note the sizes for both driver and passenger sides — they are almost always different lengths

Most cars have the driver-side wiper longer than the passenger side. Some vehicles have a rear wiper with a third, shorter blade.

Common Wiper Sizes

Vehicle Type Driver Side Passenger Side
Compact car 22–24 in (55–60 cm) 16–18 in (40–45 cm)
Mid-size sedan 24–26 in (60–65 cm) 16–20 in (40–50 cm)
SUV / Crossover 24–28 in (60–70 cm) 18–22 in (45–55 cm)
Truck 20–24 in (50–60 cm) 18–20 in (45–50 cm)

Blade Types

Type Description Best For
Traditional (framed) Metal frame holds rubber blade Most weather conditions
Beam (bracketless) One-piece curved design, no frame Snow, ice, cleaner look
Hybrid Solid outer shell, rubber blade inside All-weather performance
Winter Heavy rubber cover, resists ice/snow packing Cold climates

When to Replace Wiper Blades

Replace wiper blades every 6–12 months, or immediately if you notice:

  • Streaking — leaving bands of water
  • Skipping or chattering noise
  • Squealing
  • Blade lifting at high speeds
  • Visible cracks or tears in the rubber

Installation Tips

Always replace both wiper blades at the same time — they wear at the same rate. Check the connection type (hook, pinch tab, pin, or bayonet) before buying, as not all blades fit all arms. Many auto parts stores will install them for free.

Wiper Fluid

Change your wiper fluid seasonally. In winter, use fluid rated for −20°C (−4°F) or lower. In summer, use a formula with insect remover. Never use plain water — it doesn’t contain surfactants, can freeze, and promotes mineral buildup on the windshield.
