Shipping Cost Estimator

Estimate shipping costs based on package weight, dimensions, distance, and carrier type.
Supports both lb/in and kg/cm units.

Estimated Shipping Cost

Shipping cost estimation combines package weight, dimensions, destination zone, and carrier rate tables to calculate the cost of sending a parcel with major carriers like UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL.

Core concepts:

Dimensional Weight (DIM weight): Most carriers charge based on whichever is greater — actual weight or dimensional weight. DIM Weight (lbs) = (Length × Width × Height in inches) ÷ DIM Factor

Carrier DIM Factor
UPS / FedEx (domestic) 139
USPS Priority Mail 166
DHL 139

Billable Weight = MAX(Actual Weight, DIM Weight)

Shipping zones (US domestic): Zones 1–8 represent distance from origin to destination zip code. Zone 1 = adjacent areas; Zone 8 = cross-country. Each additional zone typically adds $0.50–$3.00 per pound.

Worked example: Package: 3 lbs actual weight, 12×10×8 inches. Shipping to Zone 5 via UPS Ground. DIM Weight = (12 × 10 × 8) ÷ 139 = 960 ÷ 139 = 6.9 lbs Billable Weight = MAX(3, 6.9) = 6.9 lbs (DIM weight wins)

UPS Ground Zone 5 rate for ~7 lbs (2025 approximate): $18–$24

Carrier comparison for small packages (2025 estimates):

Carrier 1 lb, Zone 5 5 lbs, Zone 5 Notes
USPS First Class $6–$8 N/A (max 15.99 oz) Best for under 1 lb
USPS Priority Mail $9–$13 $16–$22 Flat rate boxes available
UPS Ground $12–$16 $18–$25 Best for heavy, distant
FedEx Ground $11–$15 $17–$24 Similar to UPS
FedEx Home Delivery $12–$16 $18–$25 Residential surcharge

Money-saving tip: USPS Priority Mail flat-rate boxes eliminate zone pricing entirely — ship anything that fits for a flat $10.60–$22.45 regardless of weight or destination.
