Professional calligraphy envelope addressing requires precise layout planning. The text block must be centered both horizontally and vertically, with consistent line spacing that accommodates the letter size and script style. Good layout prevents the embarrassment of running out of room on the last line or having lopsided margins.
Layout Calculation
The text block is the rectangular area containing all address lines, centered on the envelope. The key measurements are:
Text Block Height = (Number of Lines × Line Height) + ((Number of Lines − 1) × Line Gap)
Where:
- Line Height = the x-height of the script plus ascenders and descenders (typically 1.5–2.5× the nib width for the letter body)
- Line Gap = space between the baseline of one line and the cap line of the next (typically 0.5–1.0× the line height)
Vertical Centering
Top Margin = (Envelope Height − Text Block Height) / 2
For traditional postal etiquette, the text block sits slightly above center (45% from the top, 55% from the bottom), which is more visually pleasing than mathematical center.
Adjusted Top Margin = (Envelope Height − Text Block Height) × 0.45
Horizontal Centering
For centered alignment: Left Margin = (Envelope Width − Longest Line Width) / 2
Estimating line width requires knowing the average character width for your script. For Copperplate at a 55° slant:
Line Width ≈ Number of Characters × Nib Width × 3.5
Worked Example
An A7 envelope (133 × 184 mm) with 4 address lines in Copperplate using a Nikko G nib (0.5 mm flex to 1.5 mm):
Line height with ascenders/descenders: 8 mm Line gap: 5 mm Text block height = (4 × 8) + (3 × 5) = 32 + 15 = 47 mm Top margin = (133 − 47) × 0.45 = 86 × 0.45 = 38.7 mm from top edge

Return Address Placement
The return address goes in the upper-left corner with margins of approximately 10–15 mm from the top and left edges. Use a smaller nib size (one step down) for the return address. Line spacing should be about 60–70% of the main address spacing.
Guideline Sheet Method
Create a guideline sheet on card stock with horizontal lines drawn at your calculated spacing. Slide it inside the envelope and use a light box or bright window to see the lines through the envelope paper. This gives perfectly spaced, straight lines without pencil marks on the envelope.
