Candle Scent Throw Rating Calculator
Estimate your candle scent throw strength based on fragrance load, wax type, room size, and wick performance.
How Candle Scent Throw Is Calculated
Scent throw refers to how strongly a candle’s fragrance fills a room. “Cold throw” is the scent when unlit. “Hot throw” is the scent while burning. This calculator estimates hot throw performance on a 1-10 scale based on key variables.
Factors That Affect Scent Throw
Fragrance load percentage is the most controllable factor. Most waxes have a maximum fragrance oil capacity:
| Wax Type | Max Fragrance Load | Throw Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Soy (container) | 10-12% | 0.75 |
| Paraffin (container) | 10-12% | 1.00 |
| Coconut blend | 10-12% | 0.90 |
| Beeswax | 6-8% | 0.60 |
| Palm wax | 6-8% | 0.80 |
Base throw score formula:
Base_Score = (Fragrance_Pct / Max_Load) × 10 × Wax_Multiplier
Room size adjustment:
Room_Factor = Reference_Area / Actual_Room_Area
Where Reference_Area is 15 m² (the standard test room for scent evaluation). A larger room dilutes the scent, reducing perceived throw.
Wick performance adjustment:
A properly sized wick creates a full melt pool, which is essential for scent throw. An undersized wick only melts the center, trapping fragrance in the solid wax at the edges.
- Full melt pool: 1.0× multiplier
- Partial melt pool (75%): 0.75×
- Tunneling (50% or less): 0.50×
Final Score
Final_Score = Base_Score × Room_Factor × Wick_Factor
Capped at 10.0 (maximum). Scores above 7 indicate strong throw. Scores of 4-7 are moderate. Below 4 is considered weak.
Worked Example
Paraffin candle, 8% fragrance load (max 12%), 20 m² room, full melt pool:
- Base: (8/12) × 10 × 1.0 = 6.67
- Room factor: 15/20 = 0.75
- Wick factor: 1.0
- Final: 6.67 × 0.75 × 1.0 = 5.0 (moderate throw)
Tips for Better Scent Throw
Adding fragrance at the correct temperature (usually 60-65°C for soy, 80-85°C for paraffin) ensures proper binding with the wax molecules. Allowing a full 24-48 hour cure time before burning also significantly improves throw.
