Candle Wax Weight Calculator

Calculate exactly how much wax you need to fill any candle container, including fragrance oil and dye.

How candle wax weight is calculated:

Candle containers are measured by their fluid ounce capacity, but wax is sold and measured by weight. Liquid and solid wax have different densities, so the conversion is not 1:1.

The core formula:

Wax weight (oz) = Container volume (fl oz) × Density factor × Fill percentage

Density factors by wax type:

  • Soy wax: 0.85 (lighter than water — fills more volume per ounce)
  • Paraffin wax: 0.90
  • Beeswax: 0.96
  • Coconut wax: 0.88

Fill percentage: Most candles are poured to 80–90% of the container’s volume to leave a lip at the top. 85% is the standard.

Worked example:

An 8 fl oz mason jar filled with soy wax to 85%:

  • Wax needed = 8 × 0.85 × 0.85 = 5.78 oz of soy wax

Fragrance oil load:

Most waxes hold 6–10% fragrance by weight of the total wax. Soy wax typically performs best at 6–8%.

Fragrance oil (oz) = Wax weight × Fragrance load %

For 5.78 oz wax at 8% load: 5.78 × 0.08 = 0.46 oz fragrance oil

Burn time estimate:

  • Soy and coconut wax: approximately 7–9 hours per ounce of wax
  • Paraffin: 6–8 hours per ounce
  • Beeswax: 9–12 hours per ounce (longest burning)

Tips for consistent candles:

  • Always weigh wax and fragrance — volume measuring leads to inconsistent results
  • Add fragrance oil at 185°F (85°C) for soy, 160°F (71°C) for paraffin
  • Pour temperature: 130–140°F (54–60°C) for container soy candles
  • Let candles cure 48–72 hours before burning for best scent throw
