Adding a floor to an attic is one of the most popular home improvement projects — it converts empty overhead space into usable storage. The key requirements are calculating the correct amount of sheet material and verifying that your attic joists can handle the additional load.
Attic Joist Load Capacity
Before flooring an attic, the joists must be able to safely carry the weight. Attic joists in most homes are designed to carry limited live loads — typically 10–20 lbs per square foot (psf) for storage-only attics. If you plan to use the space as a living area, the joists must support 40 psf.
Common joist spans and capacities (approximate):
- 2×6 joists at 16" o.c.: ~10–15 psf live load (light storage)
- 2×8 joists at 16" o.c.: ~20–30 psf (medium storage)
- 2×10 joists at 16" o.c.: ~30–40 psf (heavier loads)
Always consult a structural engineer if you are unsure — overloading attic joists can cause ceiling failure.
Choosing the Right Material
Plywood (¾ inch, 23/32 or 19/32 for lighter loads): The gold standard for attic floors. Stronger, stiffer, and more moisture resistant than OSB. Ideal for long-term storage.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board): Less expensive than plywood. Adequate for light storage but more susceptible to moisture damage. Avoid in poorly ventilated attics.
Attic Flooring Decking Panels: Precut panels (often 4×2 ft) designed specifically for attic flooring, with built-in legs to sit above insulation. Easy to install; no cutting required.
Calculating Material Quantity
A standard sheet of plywood or OSB is 4 feet × 8 feet = 32 square feet.
Sheets Needed = Total Area (sq ft) ÷ 32, rounded up + 10% waste factor.
In metric: 1220mm × 2440mm sheets = approximately 2.97 m². Sheets = Total Area (m²) ÷ 2.97, rounded up + 10%.
Typical Costs
- ¾" plywood: $45–$80 per sheet (4×8 ft)
- ¾" OSB: $30–$55 per sheet
- Precut attic panels: $25–$45 per 4×2 ft panel
