Board and Batten Layout

What Is Board and Batten? Board and batten is a vertical siding or paneling style using wide boards with narrow strips (battens) covering the seams. It originated as a practical solution for rustic barns and agricultural buildings in colonial America and Northern Europe. The wide boards are installed first, then narrower battens are nailed over the gaps between boards. Today it is popular for both exterior siding and interior accent walls — the style gives a clean, vertical visual emphasis.

Board and Batten vs Batten and Board Traditional board and batten: wide boards, narrow battens covering the seams. Reverse board and batten: narrow boards first, then wider boards overlapping them. Creates deeper shadow lines. Interior modern style: flat boards (no gaps) with thin battens nailed directly to drywall to create a grid pattern.

Spacing Principles Even spacing is critical — the goal is for all gaps between battens to be equal. For interior walls: battens are typically spaced 12 to 24 inches on center. For exterior siding: boards are 8 to 12 inches wide, battens 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide. Start and end with a half-space or half-board for a centered, symmetrical look.

Standard Dimensions Batten width: typically 1×2 (1.5" actual), 1×3 (2.5" actual), or 1×4 (3.5" actual). Board width (exterior): 1×8 (7.25"), 1×10 (9.25"), 1×12 (11.25"). Interior battens are often 1×2 or 1×3, applied directly to primed drywall.

Material Tips Cedar or redwood: naturally rot-resistant, ideal for exterior. Expensive. Pine: common and affordable. Requires primer and paint for exterior use. MDF: for interior only — swells when wet. Takes paint beautifully. PVC trim boards: rot-proof, paintable, dimensionally stable. More expensive but zero maintenance. Exterior battens must be caulked at top and both sides to prevent water infiltration.

Paint and Finish Prime all cut ends before installation — end grain absorbs moisture fastest. Use exterior latex paint for outdoors; two coats over primer is standard. Dark colors (navy, charcoal, black) are extremely popular for board and batten exteriors in modern farmhouse design. Interior accent walls are typically painted the same color as the wall for a tone-on-tone effect.
