Caulk is one of the most versatile and underappreciated materials in construction and home improvement. It creates a flexible, airtight, or watertight seal in gaps and joints — and knowing how much you need before starting a job saves multiple trips to the hardware store.
How caulk coverage is calculated: Coverage depends on the cross-section of the joint. Caulk fills a roughly triangular or semi-circular bead. The volume of material needed is:
Volume = Length × (Width × Depth) × constant
For a triangular bead: Volume ≈ 0.5 × W × D × L For a semi-circular bead: Volume ≈ 0.39 × W² × L
A standard caulk tube contains approximately 300ml (10.1 fl oz) of material.

Types of caulk and their uses:
- Silicone: Best for bathrooms, kitchens, around fixtures. Waterproof, flexible, long-lasting. Cannot be painted. Difficult to clean up.
- Acrylic / latex: Best for interior gaps, around trim, baseboards, door frames. Easy to paint and clean up with water.
- Polyurethane: Heavy-duty exterior applications, concrete, wood. Very durable and paintable.
- Fireblock caulk: Required by code around pipes and wires passing through walls and floors.
Application tips:
- Cut nozzle at 45° for clean bead application
- Apply in one smooth, continuous stroke if possible
- Smooth with a wet finger or caulk tool immediately after application
- Silicone takes 24–48 hours to fully cure; acrylic can be painted in 1–2 hours
Always buy 10–15% more than calculated — tubes rarely empty completely and it’s better to have a spare.
