Cubic Feet Calculator

Calculate cubic feet from length, width, and height in any unit.
Converts to cubic yards, cubic meters, gallons, and liters for shipping or concrete.

Cubic Feet

Cubic feet measures volume: length times width times height, with all three sides in feet. A box 2 feet on every side holds 8 cubic feet. The arithmetic is easy. What trips people up is mixing units, measuring one side in inches and another in feet, so convert everything to the same unit first. This calculator handles that. Measure in inches, meters, or whatever is handy, pick the unit, and it works in feet behind the scenes.

Where you actually need cubic feet tells you which conversion you want. Ordering concrete or soil? You want cubic yards, which is cubic feet divided by 27, because that is how those materials are sold. A 10 by 10 foot slab poured 4 inches thick is about 33 cubic feet, which works out to roughly 1.2 cubic yards, and you would order 1.5 to be safe. Shipping a freight pallet? Carriers price by the cubic foot or by cubic meters, and one cubic meter is about 35.3 cubic feet. Sizing a fridge, freezer, or storage unit? That capacity is quoted in cubic feet too.

The calculator also gives gallons and liters, handy for tanks, ponds, and aquariums, since one cubic foot holds about 7.48 US gallons. A quick warning on round or irregular containers: this assumes a rectangular box. For a cylinder you need pi times radius squared times height, not length times width. And always round up when ordering material. Running a half-yard short on a concrete pour means a cold joint in the slab and a second delivery fee.
