Drywall Texture Coverage Calculator

Calculate how much drywall texture compound you need based on area, texture style, and application method.

Texture Material Needed

Drywall texture adds visual interest and hides imperfections in walls and ceilings. Different texture styles require different amounts of material and have different coverage rates.

Common texture styles and coverage rates:

Texture Style Coverage per 20 kg Bag Coverage per 5 gal Bucket
Orange Peel (light) 28–37 m² (300–400 ft²) 28–37 m² (300–400 ft²)
Orange Peel (heavy) 19–28 m² (200–300 ft²) 19–28 m² (200–300 ft²)
Knockdown 14–23 m² (150–250 ft²) 14–23 m² (150–250 ft²)
Skip Trowel 9–14 m² (100–150 ft²) 9–14 m² (100–150 ft²)
Popcorn/Acoustic 9–14 m² (100–150 ft²) 9–14 m² (100–150 ft²)
Smooth Skim Coat 9–14 m² (100–150 ft²) 9–14 m² (100–150 ft²)
Stomp/Slap Brush 14–19 m² (150–200 ft²) 14–19 m² (150–200 ft²)

Formula: Material needed = Total area / Coverage rate per container

What each variable means:

  • Total area — wall or ceiling area to texture (subtract windows and doors)
  • Texture style — determines how thickly material is applied
  • Application method — spray covers differently than hand-trowel

When to use this calculator:

  • Planning a texturing project for new construction or renovation
  • Estimating material costs before starting
  • Determining how many bags or buckets to purchase
  • Comparing material needs across different texture styles

Practical example: A room measuring 4 m × 5 m (13 × 16 ft) with 2.5 m (8 ft) ceilings has approximately 45 m² (485 ft²) of wall area, minus about 4 m² (43 ft²) for a door and window. For knockdown texture, you would need about 2–3 bags of texture compound.

Tips:

  • Always buy 10–15% extra material to account for waste and touch-ups.
  • Practice your texture pattern on scrap drywall before doing the actual walls.
  • Prime the drywall before texturing for better adhesion and uniform appearance.
  • Temperature affects drying time — apply between 10–30°C (50–86°F).
  • Spray application uses more material than hand application but is faster.
  • Ceilings typically need 10–15% more material than walls due to gravity.
