Wood and wood-composite flooring expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. If you don’t leave adequate space around the perimeter of the room, the floor will have nowhere to expand — and it will buckle, warp, or create pressure on walls and door frames.
Why expansion gaps are critical: Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture from the air. When humidity rises (e.g., summer), wood expands. When humidity drops (winter with heating), it contracts. This movement can be significant: a solid hardwood floor in a 5m × 5m room can move up to 10–15mm seasonally.
Standard expansion gap guidelines:
Hardwood (solid):
- Minimum gap: 12–15mm (½ inch) from all walls, fixed objects (stairs, cabinetry, fireplace hearths)
- Add 3mm per additional meter of room width beyond 4m
- For rooms wider than 8m, consult manufacturer, additional expansion gaps in the middle of the floor may be needed
Laminate flooring:
- Minimum gap: 10–12mm (⅜–½ inch)
- Generally more stable than solid wood due to composite core
LVP / SPC (Luxury Vinyl Plank):
- Most rigid core LVP: 6–9mm gap minimum
- Glue-down LVP: gap still required at walls (3–6mm)
- LVP is the most dimensionally stable of these floor types
Climate considerations:
- High humidity / tropical climates: increase gap by 25–50%
- Dry / arid climates (or homes with underfloor heating): increase gap by 15–25%
- Temperate, well-controlled humidity: use standard minimum
The gap is always hidden: Expansion gaps are covered by baseboard or door threshold molding. They are not visible in the finished installation. This is why you must install baseboard AFTER the floor — baseboard covers the gap but is not nailed through the floor.
Common mistake: Pushing furniture or appliances against the wall during installation compresses the gap. Mark your gap size on a piece of scrap wood and use it as a consistent spacer.
