Joists Needed

Estimating floor joists comes down to two numbers: how wide the floor is along the wall the joists rest on, and how far apart you space them. Joists run in parallel across the room, so the count depends on the dimension running perpendicular to them, divided by the on-center spacing.

On-center spacing means the distance from the center of one joist to the center of the next, not the gap between them. The common choices are 16 inches on-center for most floors, 12 inches where you need extra stiffness or are carrying tile, and 24 inches for lighter loads or engineered joists. Tighter spacing means more joists, a stiffer floor, and a longer material list.

To get the count, multiply the wall length by 12 to convert to inches, divide by the spacing, and add one, because there is a joist at each end of the run. A 12-foot wall at 16 inches on-center needs 144 divided by 16, which is 9, plus 1, so 10 joists. Multiply by the joist length to estimate total linear feet of lumber.

Round the division up when it does not come out even. On-center spacing is a ceiling, not a target: a 15-foot wall at 16 inches is 11.25 bays, and taking 11 pushes every bay out to 16.4 inches. Twelve bays and thirteen joists brings them back to 15 inches, which is inside the spec and inside the subfloor’s rating. That is the same rounding the stud, ceiling joist and deck joist calculators use, so the three agree on any wall you run through all of them.

Two things this count does not decide for you. It does not size the joists, since the depth and species needed depend on the span and the load, which you should always check against a span table or your local building code. And it does not include the rim joists that close off the ends of the run or the blocking between joists, so add a few extra boards for those.
