Grout Coverage Calculator
Calculate how much grout you need for a tiling project.
Enter tile size, grout joint width, tile thickness, and total area for an accurate quantity estimate.
How to Calculate Grout Quantity
The amount of grout needed depends on four factors: tile size, joint width, tile thickness, and total area.
The Formula
Grout (kg/m²) = [(TW + TH) ÷ (TW × TH)] × JW × D × 1.6
Where:
- TW = Tile width (mm)
- TH = Tile height (mm)
- JW = Joint width (mm)
- D = Tile thickness (mm)
- 1.6 = Approximate density of grout (g/cm³)
Multiply the result by the area in m² to get total kilograms.
Typical Grout Joint Widths
| Tile Type | Recommended Joint Width |
|---|---|
| Rectified porcelain | 1.5 – 3 mm |
| Standard ceramic (wall) | 2 – 4 mm |
| Standard ceramic (floor) | 3 – 5 mm |
| Natural stone | 3 – 8 mm |
| Rustic / handmade tiles | 8 – 15 mm |
| Large format tiles (600mm+) | 1.5 – 3 mm |
Coverage Rates by Tile Size (Approximate kg/m²)
| Tile Size | 2mm joint | 3mm joint | 5mm joint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 × 100 mm | 1.0 kg | 1.5 kg | 2.4 kg |
| 200 × 200 mm | 0.5 kg | 0.7 kg | 1.2 kg |
| 300 × 300 mm | 0.4 kg | 0.5 kg | 0.9 kg |
| 600 × 600 mm | 0.2 kg | 0.3 kg | 0.5 kg |
These values assume a tile thickness of 8mm. Thicker tiles require more grout.
Tips
- Always add 10–15% extra for waste, cuts, and uneven joints
- Different grout types (sanded, unsanded, epoxy) have different coverage rates
- Sanded grout is for joints 3mm and wider
- Unsanded grout is for joints under 3mm (prevents scratching polished surfaces)
- Epoxy grout is used in wet areas and for dark/white joints that must stay stain-free
