Plywood Sheet Count Calculator

Calculate how many plywood sheets you need for a floor, wall, or roof project.
Supports metric and imperial measurements.

Plywood Sheets Needed

Plywood sheets are sold in standard sizes — most commonly 4 ft × 8 ft (1,220 mm × 2,440 mm) in North America and 2,440 mm × 1,220 mm internationally. Calculating how many sheets you need is straightforward, but always add a waste factor for cuts, mistakes, and matching grain or patterns.

The formula: Area of Project ÷ Area per Sheet = Number of Sheets (before waste) Total Sheets = Ceiling(Sheets Needed × (1 + Waste Factor))

Common standard sheet sizes:

Size Area per Sheet
4 ft × 8 ft (standard) 32 sq ft / 2.97 m²
5 ft × 5 ft (marine/hardwood) 25 sq ft / 2.32 m²
4 ft × 10 ft (extended) 40 sq ft / 3.72 m²
1,220 × 2,440 mm (metric standard) 2.98 m²
1,250 × 2,500 mm (metric extended) 3.13 m²

Recommended waste factors:

Project Type Waste Allowance
Simple rectangular room 5–8%
L-shaped or irregular room 10–12%
Complex cuts / many openings 15–20%
Diagonal installation 15–20%
Outdoor / marine project 10%

Flooring tip: When installing plywood subfloor, stagger the seams (like brickwork) to add structural rigidity. This increases waste slightly but significantly improves floor strength.

Thickness guide:

Use Typical Thickness
Wall sheathing 3/8 in (9 mm)
Roof sheathing 1/2 in (12 mm)
Subfloor (16" joist spacing) 5/8 in (15 mm)
Subfloor (19.2" joist spacing) 3/4 in (18 mm)
Cabinet / furniture 3/4 in (18 mm)

Always check plywood for voids in the core before purchasing for structural uses. Higher grades (A-A, A-B) have fewer voids and provide better structural performance.
