Plywood sheets are sold in standard sizes — most commonly 4 ft × 8 ft (1,220 mm × 2,440 mm) in North America and 2,440 mm × 1,220 mm internationally. Calculating how many sheets you need is straightforward, but always add a waste factor for cuts, mistakes, and matching grain or patterns.
The formula: Area of Project ÷ Area per Sheet = Number of Sheets (before waste) Total Sheets = Ceiling(Sheets Needed × (1 + Waste Factor))

Flooring tip: When installing plywood subfloor, stagger the seams (like brickwork) to add structural rigidity. This increases waste slightly but significantly improves floor strength.

Always check plywood for voids in the core before purchasing for structural uses. Higher grades (A-A, A-B) have fewer voids and provide better structural performance.
