Tile Layout Planning ensures you buy the right number of tiles and minimize waste. Running out mid-project means color mismatches from different dye lots.
Basic Formula:
Tiles needed = (Area / Tile area) × (1 + Waste factor)
Area Calculation:
- Rectangle:
Length × Width - In metric: measured in meters, tile area in cm converted to m
- In imperial: measured in feet, tile area in inches converted to feet
Waste Factors:

Grout Line Width: Wider grout lines (1/4" / 6 mm) reduce the number of tiles needed slightly. Narrow grout lines (1/16" / 1.5 mm) are more common with rectified tiles. This calculator includes a grout spacing adjustment.
Practical Example: Room: 10 ft × 12 ft = 120 sq ft. Tile: 12" × 12" = 1 sq ft each. Straight layout with 10% waste: 120 × 1.10 = 132 tiles needed.
Tips:
- Always buy 10–15% extra. Tiles from different production batches may not match.
- Measure the room at multiple points — walls are rarely perfectly straight.
- Plan the layout starting from the center of the room for a balanced appearance.
- Avoid thin slivers at edges. If the last row would be less than half a tile, adjust the starting point.
- Keep leftover tiles for future repairs.
