What Is a Square of Siding? A square is the standard unit for ordering siding — it covers 100 square feet. All siding types (vinyl, wood, fiber cement, metal) are measured in squares. When ordering, always round up to the nearest square and add waste.
Vinyl Siding Basics Vinyl siding is the most popular exterior cladding in North America. It was invented in the late 1950s in the United States as a low-maintenance alternative to aluminum siding. Modern vinyl siding is UV-stabilized and impact-resistant, lasting 20–40 years with no painting required. Siding comes in 12-foot panels and is measured by its exposure — the visible height of each course. Common exposures: 4 inches, 4.5 inches, 5 inches (Dutch lap), 8 inches (double 4 lap).
How Siding Is Installed Horizontal lapped siding overlaps the course below by at least 1 inch. Exposure = the visible height per course. Courses per panel = panel height / exposure (for 12" tall panels with 4" exposure: 3 courses per 12’ panel). Starter strip is required at the bottom. J-channel goes around windows and doors.
Ordering Tips Standard waste factor: 10% for simple rectangular walls, 15% for complex walls with many cuts. Always order at least 5–10% extra for future repairs — siding colors are discontinued regularly. Accessories: you will need J-channel (around openings), F-channel (under soffit), starter strip, inside/outside corner posts. Corner posts are sold in 10-foot lengths. Count corners × height / 10 = number of posts.
Calculating Net Wall Area Total gross area = sum of all wall faces (length × height). Deduct openings: windows (typical 15 sq ft each), doors (typical 20–21 sq ft each), garage doors (typical 64–120 sq ft each). Gables: calculate as a triangle area = (base × height) / 2. The more precise your opening measurements, the more accurate your estimate.
Siding Profiles Dutch lap: most common residential profile. Has a distinctive curved top edge. Beaded lap: decorative bead at bottom of each panel — traditional look. Board and batten: vertical orientation. Requires different installation and more waste. Shake/shingle: simulated wood shingle look. Higher cost but attractive. Panel siding (soffit): smooth horizontal panels used under eaves.
Cost Estimation Vinyl siding cost: $0.90–$4.00 per sq ft material (depending on grade). Premium insulated vinyl: $2.50–$5.50 per sq ft material. Installation labor: $1.50–$4.00 per sq ft (varies by region and complexity). Total installed cost: $3–$10 per sq ft. A 2,000 sq ft house may need 15–20 squares of siding.
