Wallpaper Paste Calculator
Calculate how much wallpaper paste or adhesive you need based on wall area and paste coverage rate.
Avoid buying too much or too little.
Wallpaper Paste estimation depends on the total wall area, the type of paste, and the type of wallpaper being hung.
How the calculation works:
Paste Needed = Wall Area / Coverage Rate per Package
Standard coverage rates per package:
- Standard powder paste (1 packet): covers approximately 50-65 square feet (4.6-6 m²) of heavy wallpaper, or 80-100 square feet (7.4-9.3 m²) of standard wallpaper
- Pre-mixed paste (1 quart): covers approximately 50-75 square feet (4.6-7 m²)
- Pre-mixed paste (1 gallon): covers approximately 200-300 square feet (18.6-27.9 m²)
Wall area calculation:
Wall Area = (Room Perimeter × Ceiling Height) - Window/Door Openings
Standard deductions:
- Standard door: 21 square feet (2 m²)
- Standard window: 12 square feet (1.1 m²)
Paste type depends on wallpaper type:
- Standard (non-woven / paper): all-purpose wallpaper paste
- Vinyl / heavy wallpaper: heavy-duty or vinyl-specific paste
- Fabric / grasscloth: clay-based or specialty adhesive
- Peel-and-stick wallpaper: no paste needed (self-adhesive)
Important application tips:
- Mix paste according to package directions — too thin causes peeling, too thick causes lumps
- Let paste “book” (fold and rest) for 3-5 minutes before hanging to allow the paper to expand
- Apply paste evenly with a roller or brush — thin spots lead to bubbles and peeling
- Temperature matters: hang wallpaper in rooms above 50°F (10°C) for proper adhesion
Always buy 10-15% extra paste to ensure you have enough for difficult spots around corners, outlets, and trim.
Shelf life: Unmixed powder paste lasts years. Pre-mixed paste lasts about 1-2 years unopened, and 1-2 weeks after opening.
