Converting Oven Recipes to Air Fryer

Air fryers cook faster and at lower temperatures than conventional ovens. The reason: an air fryer is essentially a compact convection oven. It circulates hot air at high speed directly around the food, creating faster heat transfer and crispier results.

The Standard Conversion Rules

Temperature: Reduce by 25°F (about 15°C)

  • Oven at 400°F → Air fryer at 375°F
  • Oven at 350°F → Air fryer at 325°F
  • Oven at 425°F → Air fryer at 400°F

Time: Reduce by 20–25%

  • 30-minute oven recipe → ~22–24 minutes in air fryer
  • 60-minute recipe → ~45–48 minutes

Why these rules work: The air fryer’s smaller chamber and powerful fan mean heat reaches food from all directions simultaneously. A conventional oven heats from the bottom element with slow air circulation. An air fryer mimics a professional convection oven — compact, concentrated, efficient.

Common Air Fryer Cooking Times (at converted temp)

Food Air Fryer Time Temp
Chicken breast 18–22 min 375°F
French fries (frozen) 15–18 min 400°F
Salmon fillet 10–12 min 390°F
Broccoli florets 8–10 min 375°F
Bacon strips 8–10 min 350°F
Chicken wings 20–25 min 400°F
Burger patty 10–12 min 375°F
Steak (medium) 10–14 min 400°F

Pro Tips

  • Don’t overcrowd — food needs airflow on all sides. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Shake or flip halfway — promotes even browning on all sides.
  • Pat food dry — less moisture = crispier results.
  • Preheat — most air fryers benefit from 2–3 minutes preheat.
  • Check early — air fryers vary by brand. Check 5 minutes before the suggested time.
  • Breaded foods — spray lightly with oil for golden crunch without deep-frying.
  • Frozen foods — add ~5 extra minutes; no need to thaw.

Not ideal for air frying: Wet batters (tempura, beer batter) — the batter drips before it sets. Better to use a light breadcrumb coating instead.
