Cooking Oil Amount Calculator

Calculate the right amount of cooking oil for frying, sauteing, or deep frying based on pan size and method.

Oil Amount Needed

Knowing the right amount of cooking oil prevents waste, ensures proper cooking, and helps manage fat intake. Too little oil causes sticking and uneven cooking; too much wastes oil and adds unnecessary calories.

Oil amounts by cooking method:

Pan Frying / Sauteing: The oil should coat the bottom of the pan in a thin, even layer — about 2–3 mm (1/16 to 1/8 inch) deep.

  • Volume = Pan area × 2.5 mm depth

Shallow Frying: Oil should come halfway up the food — about 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches) deep.

  • Volume = Pan area × 15 mm depth

Deep Frying: Food must be fully submerged — at least 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) of oil.

  • Volume = Pot area × 65 mm depth
  • Never fill a pot more than 2/3 with oil for safety.

Common pan sizes and approximate oil needed:

Pan Size Saute Shallow Fry Deep Fry
20 cm (8 in) 15 mL (1 tbsp) 50 mL (3.5 tbsp) 500 mL (2 cups)
25 cm (10 in) 25 mL (1.7 tbsp) 75 mL (5 tbsp) 750 mL (3 cups)
30 cm (12 in) 35 mL (2.4 tbsp) 105 mL (7 tbsp) 1000 mL (4 cups)

When to use this calculator:

  • Deciding how much oil to pour for different cooking methods
  • Estimating oil needed for deep frying to avoid running out mid-cook
  • Tracking calorie intake from cooking oils
  • Shopping for oil — knowing how much you will use for a recipe

Practical example: Deep frying in a 25 cm (10 inch) pot with 7 cm of oil depth requires about 3.4 liters (0.9 gallons) of oil. That is a significant amount — which is why many home cooks prefer shallow frying.

Smoke points of common oils:

Oil Smoke Point
Extra virgin olive oil 190°C (375°F)
Canola/rapeseed 230°C (445°F)
Peanut 230°C (450°F)
Sunflower 230°C (450°F)
Avocado 270°C (520°F)
Coconut (refined) 230°C (450°F)

Tips:

  • Use oils with high smoke points for frying.
  • Oil can be reused 2–3 times for deep frying if strained and stored properly.
  • 1 tablespoon of oil contains about 120 calories regardless of the type.
