Ice Cream Scoop Calculator
Calculate how much ice cream you need for any number of people.
Choose your scoop size and get the total in ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons.
Ice cream scoop sizes vary widely between homes, restaurants, and ice cream shops. The standard “disher” scoop sizes used in food service are numbered — a #12 scoop holds 1/12 of a quart (about 2.6 oz), while a #20 scoop holds 1/20 of a quart (about 1.6 oz).
For party planning, three practical scoop sizes:
Small: 1 oz — similar to a restaurant amuse-bouche or tasting portion Regular: 2 oz — the classic single scoop at an ice cream shop Large: 3 oz — a generous scoop, typical of home servings
In volume: 1 pint = 16 oz, 1 quart = 32 oz, 1.5 quart = 48 oz (standard container), 1 gallon = 128 oz.
A standard 1.5-quart (48 oz) container yields about 16 large scoops, 24 regular scoops, or 48 small scoops.
For parties: plan for 1.5-2 scoops per person as dessert, or 2-3 scoops if ice cream is the main event (sundae bar, ice cream social). People always go back for seconds, and leftover ice cream is never a hardship.
Buy in the largest container size available — a 1-gallon tub is cheaper per ounce and more eco-friendly than four pints.
Soft-serve vs hard scoop: hard-pack ice cream is denser; soft-serve is lighter and fluffier. A 2 oz scoop of soft-serve looks bigger than the same weight of hard-pack. These estimates assume standard hard-pack ice cream.
