Marinade Amount Calculator
Calculate how much marinade you need based on the type and weight of meat you are preparing.
Marinades add flavor and can help tenderize meat. Using the right amount ensures even coverage without waste.
General marinade ratio:
Marinade Volume = Meat Weight x 0.5 cups per pound
For every 1 pound (454 g) of meat, you need approximately 1/2 cup (120 ml) of marinade. This provides enough liquid to coat all surfaces when placed in a bag or shallow container.
Marinade times by protein:
| Protein | Minimum Time | Maximum Time |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken breast | 2 hours | 12 hours |
| Chicken thighs | 2 hours | 24 hours |
| Beef steak | 2 hours | 24 hours |
| Pork chops | 2 hours | 12 hours |
| Fish and seafood | 15 minutes | 1 hour |
| Tofu | 30 minutes | 24 hours |
Important safety notes:
- Never reuse marinade that has touched raw meat unless you boil it first for at least 5 minutes.
- Acid-based marinades (citrus, vinegar) can make fish mushy if left too long.
- Always marinate in the refrigerator, never at room temperature.
- Use a zip-lock bag for the most even coverage with the least marinade.
Basic marinade formula: 3 parts oil, 1 part acid (vinegar or citrus), plus seasonings. This ratio creates a balanced marinade that flavors without overpowering.
