Oatmeal Serving Calculator
Calculate the dry oats and liquid needed for any number of oatmeal servings.
Covers rolled oats, steel-cut, and instant oats with thick or thin texture options.
Oat-to-liquid ratios vary by type and your preference for texture. Getting this right is the difference between porridge and wallpaper paste.
Standard ratios per serving:
Rolled oats (old-fashioned):
- Normal texture: 1/2 cup oats (40g) + 1 cup liquid (240ml)
- Thick: 2/3 cup oats (53g) + 2/3 cup liquid (160ml)
- Thin: 1/3 cup oats (27g) + 1 cup liquid (240ml)
Steel-cut oats:
- Standard: 1/4 cup oats (40g) + 1 cup liquid (240ml)
- They take 20-30 minutes to cook and triple in volume
Instant oats:
- 1 packet = 28g oats + 1/2-2/3 cup liquid (120-160ml)
The liquid can be water, milk, almond milk, or any combination. Milk adds richness and about 150 calories per cup (whole milk). Water keeps it clean and low-calorie.
Cooking tips: Add a pinch of salt — it dramatically improves the flavor without adding significant calories. For rolled oats, bring the liquid to a boil first, then stir in the oats and reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes. Steel-cut: toast in a dry pan for 2-3 minutes before adding liquid for a nuttier flavor.
Calories per serving (plain, with water):
- Rolled oats (40g): ~150 kcal, 5g protein, 4g fiber
- Steel-cut (40g): ~150 kcal, 5g protein, 4g fiber
- Instant (1 packet, 28g): ~100 kcal, 3.5g protein, 3g fiber
Add milk and toppings separately — they change the calorie count significantly.
