Waffle Batter Calculator
Scale waffle batter for any number of waffles or waffle iron size.
Calculate exact ingredients for perfect waffles every time.
Waffles are a beloved breakfast food around the world, and the key to perfect waffles is the right batter ratio combined with the correct volume for your specific waffle iron. Most waffle iron sizes require between 120 ml (½ cup) and 240 ml (1 cup) of batter per waffle, so scaling your recipe correctly prevents waste and soggy overflow.
Standard Waffle Batter Ratio (Classic)
The classic waffle batter recipe scales as follows per cup (240 ml) of batter:
- Flour: 60 g (½ cup)
- Baking powder: 2.5 g (½ tsp)
- Sugar: 8 g (1.5 tsp)
- Salt: 1.5 g (¼ tsp)
- Egg: ½ egg (1 egg per 2 waffles)
- Butter (melted): 28 g (2 tbsp)
- Milk: 120 ml (½ cup)
- Vanilla: ½ tsp (optional)
Waffle Iron Sizes
| Waffle Iron Type | Batter Per Waffle |
|---|---|
| Mini (4-inch / 10 cm) | 60–80 ml (¼ cup) |
| Standard round (7-inch / 18 cm) | 180–200 ml (¾ cup) |
| Belgian (deep grid, 8-inch / 20 cm) | 200–240 ml (1 cup) |
| Large Belgian (9-inch / 23 cm) | 240–300 ml (1–1.25 cup) |
| Heart-shaped | 120–150 ml (½ cup) |
Belgian vs Classic Waffles
Belgian waffles use yeast or whipped egg whites to create a lighter, crispier, deeper-pocketed waffle. Classic waffles use baking powder for lift. Belgian waffles generally need a bit more batter per waffle due to the deeper grid.
The Secret to Crispy Waffles
- Do not overmix — lumps in batter are fine and prevent toughness
- Let batter rest 5 minutes before using to allow gluten to relax
- Make sure the iron is fully preheated before adding batter
- Don’t open the iron during the first 2 minutes — steam escaping too early causes sticking
- Adding a tablespoon of cornstarch to the dry ingredients significantly increases crispiness
Substitutions
- Dairy-free: Replace milk with oat milk or almond milk 1:1
- Gluten-free: Use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend
- Extra crispy: Replace 20% of flour with cornstarch
- Richer: Replace milk with buttermilk for a slight tang
