Wine Serving Size Calculator
Calculate how many wine glasses per bottle, total bottles needed for a party, and standard serving sizes for red, white, and sparkling wine.
Pouring the right amount of wine for a gathering takes a little planning. Too little and guests go thirsty. Too much and you have opened bottles going to waste.
Standard wine facts:
- A standard wine bottle holds 750 mL.
- A standard glass pour is 150 mL (5 oz) — giving 5 glasses per bottle.
- A generous pour is 175 mL (6 oz) — giving about 4 glasses per bottle.
- A tasting pour is 90 mL (3 oz) — giving about 8 pours per bottle.
Larger bottle formats:
- A Magnum (1.5 L) = 10 standard glasses.
- A Double Magnum (3 L) = 20 standard glasses.
- Magnums are great for dinner parties — they age better and make an impression.
Typical consumption by event type:
- Dinner party: 2–3 glasses per person. Wine accompanies the meal.
- Casual gathering: 1–2 glasses per person. Lighter drinking, more socialising.
- Wine tasting: 3–4 small pours per person across multiple bottles.
- Celebration / toast: 1 glass per person. Just enough for the moment.
The 1-bottle-per-2-guests rule of thumb: For a dinner party, plan one 750 mL bottle per 2 guests as a starting point. For a 3-hour+ event with wine-loving guests, budget closer to 1 bottle per guest.
Wine and temperature:
- Red wine: 16–18°C (61–64°F) — slightly below room temperature. Do not serve warm.
- White wine: 8–12°C (46–54°F) — well chilled but not ice cold.
- Sparkling wine / Champagne: 6–8°C (43–46°F) — well chilled throughout serving.
Red vs. white split: For mixed gatherings, a 60% red / 40% white split works well in most settings. Adjust based on the season: more white in summer, more red in winter.
Always have at least one extra bottle on hand — it is better to have a spare than to run short.
