Pottery Glaze Calculator

Calculate pottery glaze quantity from piece dimensions and application method.
Returns oz and grams needed for dipping, brushing, and spraying techniques.

Glaze Needed

Pottery glaze is a glass-like coating fused to clay during the kiln firing process. The amount of glaze you need depends on the piece’s surface area, the application method (dipping, brushing, or spraying), and the glaze’s specific gravity — which varies between manufacturers and glaze types.

Coverage calculation formula:

Glaze Needed = Surface Area / Coverage Rate per Unit Volume

Surface Area of Cylinder (mug/vase) = 2π × r × h + π × r² (bottom only if unglazed outside)

Surface Area of Hemisphere (bowl interior) ≈ 2π × r²

Variable definitions:

  • r: radius of the piece in inches or centimeters
  • h: height of the piece
  • Coverage Rate: how much surface area one pint or liter of glaze covers at standard application thickness
  • Specific Gravity: a glaze’s density relative to water (1.40–1.50 is standard for dipping glazes)

Coverage rates by application method:

Method Per Pint Per Liter
Dipping 6–8 sq ft 1.3–1.7 m²
Brushing 4–6 sq ft 0.9–1.3 m²
Spraying 5–7 sq ft 1.1–1.5 m²

Standard piece surface area estimates:

Piece Approximate Area
Small mug (10 oz) ~45 sq in / 290 cm²
Large mug (16 oz) ~65 sq in / 420 cm²
Cereal bowl (6 in) ~80 sq in / 515 cm²
Dinner plate (10 in) ~110 sq in / 710 cm²
Vase (8 in tall, 4 in wide) ~120 sq in / 775 cm²

Worked example: You are dipping a batch of 20 large mugs. Each mug: 65 sq in = 0.45 sq ft Total area: 20 × 0.45 = 9 sq ft Dipping coverage: ~7 sq ft/pint Glaze needed: 9 / 7 = 1.3 pints → buy 2 pints for safety margin

Glaze thickness guide:

  • Standard dip: 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) wet; fires down to ~1/32 inch
  • Too thin: pale, washed-out color; clay body shows through
  • Too thick: rich color but risk of glaze crawling or running during firing
  • Specific gravity test: float a hydrometer in your glaze bucket; 1.45 is the sweet spot for most commercial dipping glazes

Volume conversion: 1 pint = 473 ml. 1 quart = 946 ml. 1 gallon = 3,785 ml.
