Degree Completion Timeline Calculator

Calculate how long it will take to finish your college degree based on credits earned, credits remaining, and your course load each semester.

Degree Completion Timeline

Planning your path to graduation requires knowing three things: how many credits you still need, how many you take each term, and whether you attend year-round or only during the academic year.

Standard degree credit requirements:

  • Associate degree: 60 credits (2 years full-time)
  • Bachelor degree: 120 credits (4 years full-time)
  • Bachelor degree (engineering/architecture): 128–136 credits
  • Master degree: 30–60 credits above bachelor

Full-time vs part-time: The US Department of Education defines:

  • Full-time: 12+ credits per semester
  • Half-time: 6–11 credits per semester
  • Less than half-time: Under 6 credits

Typical credits per term:

  • Full-time student: 15–18 credits per semester
  • Part-time student: 6–9 credits per semester
  • Overloaded full-time: 18–21 credits per semester (check your school’s cap)

Summer and winter terms: Taking courses in summer or winter intersessions can significantly accelerate graduation. Most students who graduate early take 15–18 credits per semester AND one summer course per year.

Transfer credits: If transferring from another institution, not all credits may apply to your new program. Count only credits that your current school has accepted toward your degree requirements.

Tips to graduate faster:

  • Take summer or winter classes
  • Test out of courses with CLEP exams (worth 3–6 credits each)
  • Take AP classes in high school for advance credit
  • Take more credits per semester if your GPA allows
