Tuition Comparison Calculator
Compare the total 4-year cost of in-state, out-of-state, and private college tuition including room, board, and annual increases.
Tuition comparison looks beyond the sticker price to determine the true cost of attending different colleges or universities after financial aid, scholarships, and expected family contribution are factored in.
The Net Cost Formula:
Net Annual Cost = Total Cost of Attendance (COA) − Gift Aid
Total COA = Tuition + Fees + Room + Board + Books + Personal expenses + Transportation
Gift aid = Grants + Scholarships (money that does not need to be repaid)
Cost of Attendance Breakdown (US average 2024):
| Category | Public In-State | Public Out-of-State | Private |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition & Fees | $11,000 | $29,000 | $42,000 |
| Room & Board | $12,000 | $12,000 | $14,000 |
| Books & Supplies | $1,200 | $1,200 | $1,200 |
| Personal | $2,000 | $2,000 | $2,500 |
| Total COA | $26,200 | $44,200 | $59,700 |
Worked Example:
Student received two offers:
- University A (public): COA $26,000, grants $8,000 → Net = $18,000/year
- University B (private): COA $58,000, grants $30,000 → Net = $28,000/year
Over 4 years: University A = $72,000, University B = $112,000 — a $40,000 difference.
4-Year Total Cost:
Total cost = Net annual cost × 4 + estimated loan interest
If funded by $18,000/year in loans at 6.5% interest over 10 years: monthly payment = $245
Practical Tips:
- Compare net price, not sticker price — a private school with large grants can beat a public school
- Use the Net Price Calculator on each college’s website (legally required for US institutions)
- Merit aid may be renewable only if you maintain a minimum GPA — read the conditions
- Factor in graduation rates — a cheaper school where you spend 5 years costs more than a pricier 4-year school
