Word Count Calculator
Count words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in your text.
Estimate reading and speaking time.
Word count analysis breaks down your text into multiple useful statistics. It is essential for meeting essay requirements, planning presentations, and optimizing content length for SEO.
How each metric is calculated:
- Words — the text is split by whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks), and each non-empty segment counts as one word.
- Characters — every letter, number, punctuation mark, and space is counted. “Characters without spaces” excludes all whitespace.
- Sentences — counted by splitting on sentence-ending punctuation (periods, exclamation marks, question marks).
- Paragraphs — counted by splitting on blank lines (two or more consecutive line breaks).
- Reading time — estimated at 250 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed.
- Speaking time — estimated at 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace.
Common word count targets:
| Type | Word Count | Approx. Reading Time |
|---|---|---|
| Tweet | 40-60 words (280 chars) | Under 15 seconds |
| Short blog post | 300-600 words | 1-2 minutes |
| Standard essay | 500-3,000 words | 2-12 minutes |
| Long article / guide | 1,000-5,000 words | 4-20 minutes |
| Short story | 1,000-7,500 words | 4-30 minutes |
| Novella | 17,500-40,000 words | 1-3 hours |
Practical example: A 1,500-word essay takes about 6 minutes to read silently and about 11.5 minutes to deliver as a speech. It is roughly 3 pages single-spaced or 6 pages double-spaced (assuming standard 12pt font and 1-inch margins).
Tips: For academic essays, confirm whether the word count requirement includes or excludes references and footnotes. For SEO content, articles between 1,500-2,500 words tend to rank best on search engines. If you are preparing a timed speech, practice with this calculator to ensure your content fits your time slot.
