Monitor PPI Calculator

Calculate your monitor's pixels per inch (PPI) from screen size and resolution.
Find the optimal Retina viewing distance.

Display Density

Pixels per inch (PPI) measures how densely packed the pixels are on a display.

Diagonal Pixels = √(Width² + Height²)

PPI = Diagonal Pixels / Screen Size (inches)

Common resolutions:

Resolution Name Pixels
1920×1080 Full HD / 1080p 2.07M
2560×1440 QHD / 1440p 3.69M
3840×2160 4K UHD 8.29M
5120×2880 5K 14.75M
7680×4320 8K 33.18M

PPI benchmarks by use:

  • Basic office work: 90–110 PPI is fine
  • General use: 110–140 PPI — good clarity
  • Design/photo work: 140–200 PPI — sharp detail
  • Retina-quality: 200+ PPI — pixels invisible at normal distance

Retina distance: The distance at which individual pixels become invisible to the human eye. Retina Distance (inches) = 3438 / PPI

Common monitor PPI:

  • 27" 1080p: 82 PPI (not great)
  • 27" 1440p: 109 PPI (good)
  • 27" 4K: 163 PPI (excellent)
  • 32" 4K: 138 PPI (very good)
