Farrier Schedule Calculator
Calculate optimal farrier visit intervals based on hoof growth rate, horse workload, and season.
Regular farrier visits are essential for equine hoof health. Hooves grow continuously — about 6–10 mm per month — and need trimming or reshoeing before they become overgrown, cracked, or unbalanced.
Base Schedule Formula: Visit Interval (weeks) = Max Hoof Length Tolerance / (Monthly Growth Rate / 4.33)
The standard maximum hoof overgrowth before a trim is needed is approximately 8–12 mm beyond the ideal trim length.
Hoof Growth Rates by Factor:
| Factor | Growth Rate Modifier |
|---|---|
| Young horse (under 5) | +20% faster |
| Senior horse (over 20) | -15% slower |
| Summer months | +25% faster |
| Winter months | -20% slower |
| High-protein diet | +15% faster |
| Biotin supplement | +10% faster |
Base Growth Rates:
- Average hoof growth: 8 mm/month (about 0.31 inches)
- Range: 5–12 mm/month depending on breed, age, nutrition, and season
Service Type Intervals:
| Service | Typical Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Barefoot trim | 4–6 weeks | Most common for unshod horses |
| Steel shoes (light work) | 6–8 weeks | Shoes protect but restrict natural wear |
| Steel shoes (heavy work) | 4–6 weeks | Harder surfaces accelerate wear |
| Corrective shoeing | 3–5 weeks | More frequent for therapeutic cases |
Worked Example: Adult horse, steel shoes, moderate work, summer:
- Base growth: 8 mm/month
- Summer modifier: ×1.25 → 10 mm/month
- Weekly growth: 10 / 4.33 = 2.31 mm/week
- Max overgrowth tolerance (shod): 10 mm
- Interval = 10 / 2.31 = 4.33 weeks → Schedule every 4 weeks
Cost Planning: At $150 per visit for full shoeing (all four hooves), a 4-week schedule costs about $1,950/year. A 6-week schedule costs about $1,300/year. Budget accordingly and never skip visits to save money — hoof neglect causes lameness and far higher vet bills.
