Canvas Size Calculator
Calculate recommended canvas size from subject dimensions and aspect ratio.
Returns standard portrait, landscape, and abstract canvas sizes in inches.
Choosing the right canvas or print size for artwork, photography, or digital files requires understanding aspect ratios, print resolution (DPI), and how physical dimensions relate to pixel dimensions.
The resolution formula: Print Width (inches) = Pixel Width / DPI Print Height (inches) = Pixel Height / DPI Pixels Required = Print Size (inches) × DPI
Standard print quality DPI requirements:
- Fine art prints: 300 DPI (minimum for sharp detail)
- Photo prints: 240–300 DPI
- Posters (viewed from 3+ ft away): 150 DPI acceptable
- Large format / billboard (viewed from 10+ ft): 72–100 DPI sufficient
Worked example — Photo to print: You have a 4,000 × 6,000 pixel photo and want to print at 300 DPI: Max print width = 4,000 / 300 = 13.3 inches Max print height = 6,000 / 300 = 20 inches Maximum print size: 13×20 inches at 300 DPI — excellent quality
Common aspect ratios:
- 3:2 — Standard DSLR sensor; fits 4×6, 6×9, 8×12, 12×18 prints perfectly
- 4:3 — Micro 4/3 cameras, monitors; fits 8×10 with slight crop
- 1:1 — Square; popular for Instagram and artwork
- 16:9 — Widescreen; fits 16×9 inch prints
Canvas sizes for artwork (standard artist stretcher bars): 8×10, 11×14, 16×20, 18×24, 24×36 inches are the most common. For large canvases over 24 inches: need a crossbar brace in the center to prevent sagging.
Pixel calculator: A 16×20 inch canvas at 300 DPI needs: 4,800 × 6,000 pixels = 28.8 megapixels. This is why 20+ megapixel cameras matter for large prints.
