Cigar Humidor Capacity Calculator

Calculate how many cigars fit in your humidor based on interior dimensions and typical cigar ring gauge and length.

Humidor Capacity

A humidor is a storage box for cigars that maintains the ideal humidity (65–72%) and temperature (65–70°F / 18–21°C). Proper humidification keeps cigars fresh and smokable for years.

How to calculate humidor capacity:

Cigars are stored in rows and layers. The interior width, depth, and height determine how many fit.

Step 1 — Cigar diameter

Ring gauge is measured in 64ths of an inch. A cigar with a 50 ring gauge has a diameter of 50/64 = 0.78 inches (about 20 mm).

Ring Gauge Diameter (inches) Diameter (mm) Common Name
40 0.63 in 16 mm Lonsdale, Panatela
44 0.69 in 17.5 mm Robusto
50 0.78 in 19.8 mm Toro, Churchill
52 0.81 in 20.6 mm Belicoso
54 0.84 in 21.4 mm Gordo
60 0.94 in 23.8 mm Gigante

Step 2 — Cigars per row

Cigars per row = floor(Interior Width ÷ Cigar Diameter)

Step 3 — Rows per layer

Rows per layer = floor(Interior Depth ÷ Cigar Length)

Step 4 — Layers per stack

Layers = floor(Interior Height ÷ Cigar Diameter)

Step 5 — Total capacity

Total = Cigars per row × Rows per layer × Layers

Practical tip: Never fill a humidor to 100% capacity. Leave 20–25% of space empty to allow air circulation. Good airflow is critical for even humidification throughout the box.

Common humidor sizes:

Humidor Size Typical Interior (in) Approx. Capacity
Desktop small 9 × 7 × 4 25–50 cigars
Desktop medium 12 × 9 × 4 50–100 cigars
Cabinet 18 × 14 × 12 100–300 cigars
Walk-in Varies 500–5,000+ cigars

Humidity management:

  • 65–70% is the standard range for storage
  • Below 65%: cigars dry out and crack
  • Above 75%: mold and beetles become a risk
  • Use a digital hygrometer — analog hygrometers drift and need calibration
