Estimated Cleaning Time

Estimating how long it takes to clean a home helps you plan your schedule realistically, decide whether to hire help, and set expectations with roommates or family. Cleaning time depends on home size, number of rooms, current cleanliness level, and whether you’re doing a quick tidy or a deep clean.

Formula: Total Cleaning Time = Σ (Room Area × Time per sq ft × Dirt Level Multiplier)

Simplified formula: Estimated Hours = Total Square Footage ÷ 300 (for a routine clean of a moderately lived-in home)

Dirt Level Multipliers:

  • Light maintenance clean: ×0.7
  • Routine weekly clean: ×1.0
  • Post-party or neglected: ×1.5
  • Move-out deep clean: ×2.0–2.5

What each variable means:

  • Time per sq ft — approximately 4–6 minutes per 100 sq ft for routine cleaning.
  • Room count — bathrooms and kitchens take disproportionately longer than bedrooms.
  • Number of occupants — more people = more surfaces to clean, more dishes, more laundry areas.

Worked example: A 1,800 sq ft, 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home, routine weekly clean:

Bedrooms (3 × 25 min): 75 min Bathrooms (2 × 30 min): 60 min Kitchen: 45 min Living/dining: 30 min Floors (vacuum + mop): 45 min Miscellaneous (dusting, mirrors, trash): 25 min

Total: 280 minutes ≈ 4 hours 40 minutes (solo cleaner)

Two cleaners working together: reduce by ~40% → ~2 hours 48 minutes

Professional cleaning benchmarks:

  • 1,000 sq ft apartment: 1.5–2.5 hours
  • 2,000 sq ft house: 3–5 hours
  • 3,000+ sq ft house: 5–8 hours
  • Deep cleaning adds 50–100% to routine times
