Closet Space Organizer Calculator

Calculate how many clothing items fit in your closet based on rod length and shelf space.
Plan your closet organization efficiently.

Closet Capacity

An organized closet reduces daily stress, saves time getting dressed, and makes it easier to see and use everything you own. Understanding your closet’s actual capacity helps you make realistic decisions about how much clothing to keep versus donate or store elsewhere.

Standard Clothing Widths on a Rod

The key measurement for planning hanging space is the width each garment takes on the rod:

Item Type Width on Rod
Dress shirts / blouses 2.5–3 cm (1 in) per item
T-shirts (folded on hanger) 2.5–3 cm (1 in) per item
Suits / blazers 5–7.5 cm (2–3 in) per item
Dresses (short) 4–5 cm (1.5–2 in) per item
Dresses (long/ball gown) 5–8 cm (2–3 in) per item
Trousers / pants 3–5 cm (1–2 in) per item
Heavy coats / parkas 7.5–12 cm (3–5 in) per item
Jeans (folded over hanger) 4–5 cm (1.5–2 in) per item

Double-Hang Sections

For short items (shirts, blazers, folded trousers), using a double-hang rod system effectively doubles capacity. A single rod at 180 cm (72 in) height becomes two rods at 90 cm and 165 cm, doubling the hanging capacity for that section.

Shelf Capacity

For folded items:

  • Sweaters / folded jeans: 3–4 items per 30 cm (12 in) of shelf width
  • T-shirts (folded KonMari style): 8–10 items per 30 cm of shelf width
  • Shoes: 1 pair per 15–20 cm (6–8 in) of shelf width

The 80% Rule

Never pack a closet completely. Leave at least 20% of rod and shelf space empty. This makes it easy to see and access items, reduces wrinkles from overcrowding, and gives you room for new items without requiring a full reorganization.

Organizing Zones

Divide your closet into zones:

  1. Daily use items: Eye level and easiest to reach
  2. Weekly items: Slightly higher or lower
  3. Seasonal / occasional items: High shelves or back of closet
  4. Shoes: Floor level, in clear boxes or on a shoe rack

Calculating What to Keep

If your closet has 150 cm (60 in) of rod space, following the 80% rule means 120 cm (48 in) of usable hanging space. At 3 cm per garment, that’s 40 hanging items. If you own 80 hanging items, 40 need to be stored, donated, or the closet expanded.
