Clothing Care Cost

This calculator estimates the true annual cost of caring for a garment, including washing, drying, dry-cleaning, and ironing — so you can compare the lifetime cost of different fabrics and care labels before buying.

The core formula is:

Annual Care Cost = (Washes/Year × Cost/Wash) + (Dry-Clean Visits/Year × Cost/Visit) + (Ironing Sessions/Year × Cost/Session)

Cost per home wash is broken down as:

Cost/Wash = (Water Cost + Electricity Cost + Detergent Cost) / Load

Using average US values: water ≈ $0.06/gallon, a top-loader uses ~40 gallons, a front-loader ~20 gallons. Electricity for a warm wash + electric dryer cycle ≈ $0.45–$0.65 at $0.13/kWh.

Worked Example: A dress shirt washed weekly (52×/yr) at home:

  • Water: 20 gal × $0.06 = $1.20 → $0.12 per shirt in a 10-shirt load
  • Dryer: $0.55 ÷ 10 = $0.055
  • Detergent: ~$0.20/load ÷ 10 = $0.02
  • Cost/wash ≈ $0.195
  • Annual cost ≈ 52 × $0.195 = $10.14

If the same shirt requires dry cleaning at $4.50/visit twice a month:

  • Annual dry-clean cost = 24 × $4.50 = $108

That’s a 10× cost difference — making the fabric and care label a major hidden expense over a garment’s lifetime (typically 3–7 years for frequent-wear items).

Reference Values: Average household spends $600–$1,000/year on clothing care. Dry-cleaning a wool suit twice monthly = ~$216/year. A simple cotton wardrobe washed at home = $40–$80/year total.
