Recommended Curtain Size

Choosing the right curtain size makes a huge difference in how a room looks. Curtains that are too narrow or too short look cheap and unfinished.

Curtain width calculation: The total curtain fabric width should be 1.5 to 3 times the window width, depending on the desired fullness.

  • Minimal fullness (1.5×): Budget-friendly, casual look
  • Standard fullness (2×): The most popular choice for most rooms
  • Luxury fullness (2.5-3×): Rich, dramatic, formal look

If you are using two panels (one on each side), divide the total width by 2 to get the width per panel.

Curtain length options:

  • Sill length: Bottom of curtain at the window sill. Best for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Below sill (apron length): 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) below the sill. Casual living spaces.
  • Floor length: 1/2 inch (1 cm) above the floor. The most common and recommended length.
  • Puddle: 2-6 inches (5-15 cm) of fabric pooling on the floor. Formal, dramatic look.

Rod placement matters:

  • Hang the rod 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) above the window frame. This makes the window appear taller.
  • Extend the rod 3-8 inches (8-20 cm) beyond each side of the window. This makes the window appear wider and allows curtains to be fully opened.

Measuring tips:

  • Measure from the rod (not the window frame) to the desired endpoint for length.
  • Measure the rod width (not the window width) for the starting width calculation.
  • Always measure at multiple points — windows are not always perfectly square.
