Gift Budget Splitter
Split the cost of a group gift fairly among contributors.
Calculate equal or proportional shares and see who owes what.
Organizing a group gift is a common social task — for birthdays, weddings, retirements, baby showers, or office celebrations. Splitting the cost fairly (and then actually collecting the money) can be awkward without a clear breakdown. This calculator helps you plan the budget and determine each person’s fair share.
Equal Splitting
The simplest approach: divide the total gift cost equally among all contributors.
Per Person = Total Cost ÷ Number of Contributors
This works well when all contributors have similar financial situations and similar closeness to the recipient.
Weighted Splitting
Sometimes it’s fair for some contributors to pay more — for example, close family members might contribute more than colleagues. Weighted splitting assigns different percentages or tiers:
- Tier 1 (close family): Pays a higher share
- Tier 2 (friends): Pays a standard share
- Tier 3 (colleagues): Pays a smaller share
Handling Rounding
When dividing an amount among many people, rounding creates small discrepancies. The common solution is to have one person (usually the organizer) pay the small difference. This calculator rounds each person’s share to the nearest cent and shows the adjusted total.
Online Collection Tools
Once you have the amounts, consider using digital payment tools to collect contributions:
- PayPal Me
- Venmo
- Zelle (US)
- Revolut (UK/EU)
- Bank transfer with a clear reference
Gift Budget Planning Tips
- Decide on a maximum total gift budget before soliciting contributions
- Communicate the total cost and per-person share clearly upfront — avoid vague asks
- Give contributors a deadline to pay
- Keep a record of who has paid
- Allow for people to opt out — don’t pressure contributors
- Consider a digital gift card if the group is large and coordination is difficult
A $200 gift split among 10 people is $20 each — very manageable. A $500 gift split among 8 is $62.50 each — significant. Always check that the per-person amount feels reasonable before committing.
