The area of a jigsaw puzzle divided by its piece count gives you the average area per piece. From that you can estimate the average piece dimensions (assuming roughly square pieces).
For a 27" × 20" puzzle with 1,000 pieces: total area = 540 sq in, average piece area = 0.54 sq in, average piece dimension ≈ 0.73" per side. In practice pieces are interlocking rectangles, not squares, but this gives a useful sense of scale.
Puzzle difficulty
The main factor is the image, not the piece count. A 500-piece landscape with clear detail is often faster than a 500-piece expanse of blue sky. But piece count and size still matter:
Fewer, larger pieces (100-300): beginner-friendly, satisfying for children and casual puzzlers. Roughly 80 to 144 pieces an hour.
Standard (500-1000 pieces): the sweet spot for most adults. A 500-piece puzzle goes at about 60 to 108 pieces an hour, a 1,000-piece one at 40 to 72, so expect somewhere between 14 and 25 hours for the thousand.
Large (1500-2000+ pieces): the pieces are much the same size as in a 1,000-piece puzzle, there are simply more of them, and sorting time grows faster than piece count. Rates drop to 25 to 45 an hour, which puts a 2,000-piece puzzle at 45 to 80 hours.
Piece count accuracy
Puzzle manufacturers sometimes add or subtract a few pieces to hit round numbers. A “1000 piece” puzzle may have 1008 or 996 pieces to make the piece grid work out. The dimensions on the box are more reliable than the piece count alone.
Completion time estimate
The rates above are for a solo adult working at a moderate pace, and the range is wide on purpose because the image matters more than the piece count. Two people working at once cuts the wall-clock time by roughly half, though not quite, because you start bumping into each other over the same section.
The difficulty label this calculator prints is based on piece count alone, since that is all it can see. Treat it as a floor. A 500-piece photograph of a gravel beach will beat a 1,000-piece cityscape every time.
