Key Copy Cost Calculator
Estimate key copying cost by type — house, high-security, transponder, and fob keys.
Returns itemized cost with locksmith vs hardware store comparison.
Key copying cost estimation calculates the total expense of duplicating house keys, car keys, or specialty keys based on key type, quantity, and service provider. Understanding the cost spectrum prevents sticker shock — car key costs in particular vary by hundreds of dollars depending on method.
Core formula: Total Cost = Σ(Key Type Price × Quantity) + Service Fees Cost per Key = Total Cost ÷ Total Keys Made
What each variable means:
- Key Type — the single most important cost driver. A standard house key costs $2–$6. A high-security medeco key costs $20–$35. A transponder car key costs $75–$250. A smart key fob can cost $250–$600+.
- Quantity — copies for all household members, plus spare sets (standard recommendation: 2 spares per exterior lock).
- Service Fee — locksmiths may charge a service call fee ($35–$75) on top of per-key cost if they travel to your location.
- Programming fee — all modern car keys with chips (transponders, smart keys) require programming to the car’s ECU. This adds $50–$150 to the cost if done separately from cutting.
Key type cost reference:
| Key Type | Hardware Store | Locksmith | Dealership |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard house key | $2–$5 | $5–$15 | N/A |
| High-security key (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) | Not available | $20–$50 | N/A |
| Car key, basic (pre-1995) | $2–$5 | $10–$25 | $15–$30 |
| Car key with transponder chip | $75–$150 | $100–$200 | $150–$400 |
| Remote key fob only | $40–$80 (aftermarket) | $100–$200 | $200–$400 |
| Smart key / keyless entry fob | $200–$400 (aftermarket) | $200–$400 | $300–$600 |
Worked example: New homeowner needs: 4 copies of front door key, 2 copies of back door key, 1 extra transponder car key for spouse.
Front door keys (4 × $4): $16 Back door keys (2 × $4): $8 Car key with transponder + programming at locksmith: $175
Total: $199
Money-saving tips:
- Buy aftermarket key fobs online ($40–$80) and have a locksmith program them — saves $100–$200 vs. dealership.
- Many hardware stores (Home Depot, Lowe’s) cut standard house keys while you wait for $2–$5, no appointment needed.
- For high-security keys, check if your locksmith can cut from code (faster and cheaper than a mobile appointment).
