Most people wash their clothes either too often or not often enough — both cause problems. Over-washing degrades fabric fibers, fades colors, and wastes water and energy. Under-washing allows bacteria, sweat, and oils to accumulate, leading to odor and skin irritation.
Recommended washing frequencies by item:
Wash after every wear:
- Underwear and socks (directly against skin, absorb sweat and bacteria)
- Workout and athletic clothing (high sweat exposure)
- Swimwear (chlorine and saltwater degrade fabric quickly if not rinsed)
- Undershirts and base layers
Wash every 2–3 wears:
- T-shirts and casual shirts
- Blouses and everyday tops
- Pajamas (unless sweating heavily at night)
Wash every 5–7 wears:
- Jeans and casual trousers (denim experts recommend even less washing)
- Casual dresses
- Skirts
Wash every 5–10 wears:
- Suits, blazers, and sports coats (air them out after each use; spot-clean stains)
- Dress pants
Monthly or as needed:
- Coats and winter jackets (2–3 times per season)
- Bras (every 2–3 wears if wearing daily — elastic degrades with frequent washing)
Bedding washing guidelines:
- Sheets and pillowcases: Every 1–2 weeks
- Duvet cover / comforter cover: Every 2–4 weeks
- Pillows: Every 3–6 months (most are machine washable)
- Duvets / comforters: Every 3–6 months or as labeled
- Mattress protectors: Every 1–2 months
Why denim is different: Denim is woven tightly enough that it doesn’t absorb as much bacteria or sweat as thinner fabrics. Many denim experts recommend washing jeans no more than once per month — or even less. Spot-clean stains immediately instead. Some people freeze their jeans to kill bacteria without washing (though this is debated).
Energy and water savings: Washing less frequently saves approximately 40% of laundry-related water use. Cold water washing (30°C instead of 60°C) saves 40% of washing machine energy per cycle.
