Estimated Moving Cost

Moving costs vary dramatically based on distance, home size, whether you hire movers or DIY, and the time of year. Getting an accurate estimate requires breaking costs into distinct categories.

The formula: Total Moving Cost = Labor + Transportation + Packing Materials + Insurance + Tips + Incidentals

Professional movers — typical US rates (2024):

Local moves (under 50 miles):

  • Hourly rate: $80–$150/hour for 2-person crew
  • 1-bedroom: 3–5 hours → $240–$750
  • 3-bedroom: 7–10 hours → $560–$1,500
  • Add truck fee: $30–$100 flat

Long-distance moves (50+ miles):

  • Priced by weight and distance
  • 1-bedroom (~2,000–3,000 lbs): $800–$2,500
  • 3-bedroom (~7,000–10,000 lbs): $3,000–$8,000+
  • Cross-country (2,000+ miles): add 50–80% to above

DIY move cost breakdown:

  • Truck rental (16 ft, 3 days local): $150–$350
  • Fuel: $0.30–$0.50/mile
  • Moving blankets/straps: $30–$80
  • Boxes and packing materials: $100–$300
  • Helper labor (friends): pizza + beer ≈ $50–$150

Worked example — Local 2-bedroom, professional movers: 2-man crew, 6 hours at $110/hr: $660 Truck fee: $75 Packing materials (bought yourself): $120 Tip (15% of labor): $99 Total: $954

Seasonal pricing:

  • Peak season (May–September): 20–30% more expensive
  • Best time to move: October–April, mid-week, mid-month
  • Worst time: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day weekends

Hidden costs: Deposits (refundable), elevator/long-carry fees ($75–$200), stair fees ($50–$75 per flight), storage if dates don’t align ($100–$300/month).
