Subscription Value Calculator
Find out how much you need to use a subscription service to justify its monthly or annual cost.
Calculate your cost per use to decide if it is worth keeping.
Is Your Subscription Worth It?
The average household has 4–6 active subscriptions and often underestimates how much they collectively cost. By calculating the cost per use, you can make a data-driven decision about what to keep and what to cancel.
The Formula
Cost Per Use = Monthly Cost ÷ Uses Per Month
Break-even minimum uses:
Minimum Uses = Monthly Cost ÷ Acceptable Cost Per Use
What Is an “Acceptable” Cost Per Use?
This depends on the type of service:
| Service Type | Benchmark “Worth It” Cost Per Use |
|---|---|
| Streaming video (Netflix, etc.) | Under $0.50 per show/movie |
| Music streaming | Under $0.10 per listening session |
| Gym membership | Under $5–8 per visit |
| Meal kit service | Under $12–15 per meal delivered |
| Magazine / news | Under $0.50 per article read |
| Software tool | Under $2 per work session |
| Audiobook service | Under $15 per book |
Real-World Examples
Gym at $50/month:
- Visit 10× per month → $5.00 per visit (good)
- Visit 2× per month → $25.00 per visit (cancel it)
Netflix at $18/month:
- Watch 30 episodes → $0.60 per show (reasonable)
- Watch 3 movies → $6.00 per movie (maybe not worth it alone)
Meal kit at $120/month (8 meals):
- $15 per meal delivered with ingredients — compare to takeout ($20–35) vs. grocery cooking ($8–12)
The Annual Perspective
Monthly costs feel small but add up fast:
- $15/month = $180/year
- $30/month = $360/year
- $15 + $30 + $10 + $20 = $75/month = $900/year
Many people discover they are paying for services they barely use when they calculate the annual total.
