TV Mounting Height Calculator

Calculate the ideal height to mount your TV on the wall based on screen size and seating distance.

Ideal Mounting Height

The ideal TV mounting height places the center of the screen at eye level when seated, with a slight downward viewing angle. This prevents neck strain and provides the most comfortable viewing experience for extended periods.

The basic formula: Mount Center Height = Seated Eye Height - (Screen Height / 2 × downward angle adjustment)

For most people seated on a standard sofa, eye height is approximately 42-44 inches (107-112 cm) from the floor. The center of the TV should be at or slightly below this level.

Calculating the bottom edge of the TV (mounting height): Bottom of TV from floor = Eye Level - (TV Screen Height / 2)

For a 55-inch TV (which has a screen height of approximately 27 inches): Bottom edge = 42 - (27 / 2) = 42 - 13.5 = 28.5 inches from the floor

This means the bottom of the TV should be about 28-29 inches from the floor.

TV screen dimensions by diagonal size: TVs are measured diagonally with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The screen height is approximately: Screen Height = Diagonal × sin(arctan(9/16)) = Diagonal × 0.49 Screen Width = Diagonal × cos(arctan(9/16)) = Diagonal × 0.87

Common sizes:

  • 43-inch TV: ~21" tall × 37.5" wide
  • 50-inch TV: ~24.5" tall × 43.6" wide
  • 55-inch TV: ~27" tall × 48" wide
  • 65-inch TV: ~32" tall × 56.7" wide
  • 75-inch TV: ~36.8" tall × 65.4" wide
  • 85-inch TV: ~41.7" tall × 74.1" wide

Viewing distance recommendations: The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends a viewing angle of about 30 degrees. This translates to a viewing distance of approximately 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal.

  • 55-inch TV: 7-11 feet (2.1-3.4 m)
  • 65-inch TV: 8-13 feet (2.4-4.0 m)
  • 75-inch TV: 9-15 feet (2.7-4.6 m)

Special mounting situations: For above-fireplace mounting (not ideal but common), tilt the TV downward 5-10 degrees using a tilting mount. For bedroom TVs viewed from bed, mount higher with a 10-15 degree downward tilt. For standing desk setups, raise the center to approximately 47-50 inches.

Mounting hardware note: Ensure your wall mount is rated for your TV’s weight and VESA pattern. Always mount into wall studs or use appropriate wall anchors for drywall.
