Water Bill Estimator
Estimate your monthly water bill from household size, shower habits, lawn watering, and appliance use.
Compare to the 80-100 gallon US daily average.
This calculator estimates your monthly residential water bill by totaling consumption across all major uses and applying your utility’s tiered rate structure.
The core formula is:
Monthly Bill = Fixed Service Charge + Σ (Consumption Tier × Tier Rate)
Where consumption is broken down by end use:
Total Monthly Gallons = (Shower Gallons + Toilet Gallons + Laundry Gallons + Dishwasher Gallons + Outdoor Gallons + Miscellaneous)
Each fixture’s contribution is:
Use (gal/month) = Daily Uses × Gallons Per Use × 30
Worked Example — Family of 4:
- Showers: 4 people × 2 showers/day × 8 min × 2.1 gal/min × 30 = 2,016 gal
- Toilets: 4 people × 6 flushes/day × 1.6 gal × 30 = 1,152 gal
- Laundry: 8 loads/week × 4.3 weeks × 15 gal = 516 gal
- Dishwasher: 1 run/day × 4 gal × 30 = 120 gal
- Misc (faucets, drinking): ~600 gal
- Total ≈ 4,404 gal/month
At $0.006/gallon (US average) + $15 fixed charge: Bill ≈ $15 + (4,404 × $0.006) = $15 + $26.42 = $41.42/month
National Averages: US household average is ~3,000–4,500 gal/month, costing $30–$70. Outdoor irrigation can double usage in summer. Low-flow showerheads (1.8 gal/min vs 2.5) save ~500 gal/month per shower-taker. WaterSense-labeled toilets save up to 13,000 gal/year per household.
