Alteration Pricing Guide
Estimate costs for hemming, tapering, taking in seams, and zipper replacement.
Reference price ranges for tailors and clothing alteration shops.
Clothing alterations are priced based on labor time, fabric complexity, and garment type. Whether you are a tailor setting rates or a customer estimating costs, understanding the components helps you budget accurately.
Formula: Alteration Cost = Base Labor Rate × Estimated Time + Materials Cost Total Job Cost = Σ(Individual Alteration Costs) + Pressing / Finishing Fee
What each variable means:
- Base Labor Rate — the tailor’s hourly rate, typically $20–$80/hour depending on region and skill level.
- Estimated Time — how long each alteration takes. Simple hems take 15–30 minutes; complex structural changes can take 2+ hours.
- Materials Cost — thread, zippers, buttons, interfacing, or lining fabric used.
- Pressing / Finishing Fee — professional pressing is often charged separately ($5–$15).
Common alteration pricing benchmarks:
- Hem pants (no cuff) — $12–$25
- Hem pants (with cuff) — $18–$35
- Take in / let out waist — $20–$45
- Shorten sleeves (shirt) — $15–$30
- Shorten sleeves (jacket, with button) — $45–$90
- Take in dress sides — $30–$70
- Replace zipper (dress) — $20–$50
- Replace zipper (jacket) — $35–$75
- Taper shirt body — $25–$50
- Wedding dress alterations — $150–$800+ depending on complexity
Worked example: A customer brings in a suit jacket. Work needed: shorten sleeves with button ($60), take in back seam ($35), press and finish ($10).
Total = $60 + $35 + $10 = $105
Pricing tip for tailors: Track your actual time per alteration type for one month, then verify your rates cover at least 3× your material cost and your target hourly wage. Undercharging on complex work is the most common business mistake in this trade.
