Elastic Length Calculator

Calculate elastic length for waistbands, cuffs, and necklines from body measurement and stretch factor.
Returns cut length for any garment or sewing project.

Elastic Length

Elastic length is calculated as a percentage of the body measurement, then an overlap is added for joining the ends together.

Cut Length = (Body Measurement × Stretch Ratio) + Overlap

The stretch ratio depends on where the elastic will be used. A lower ratio means tighter elastic, which provides more hold. A higher ratio gives a more relaxed, comfortable fit.

Application Stretch Ratio Why
Waistband (firm) 85% Standard hold for skirts and pants
Waistband (relaxed) 90% Comfortable for loungewear and pajamas
Cuffs / Ankles 80% Needs to stay snug without slipping
Neckline 75-80% Must stretch over the head but recover

The overlap is the extra length needed to sew or join the two ends of the elastic together. The standard overlap is 1 inch (2.5 cm), though some sewers prefer 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) for narrow elastics.

Practical example: For a 30-inch waist using a firm waistband setting, the cut length is (30 × 0.85) + 1 = 26.5 inches. In metric, a 76 cm waist gives (76 × 0.85) + 2.5 = 67.1 cm.

Tips: Always test your elastic before cutting the full length. Stretch it around the body area and check comfort. Older elastic loses recovery over time, so use fresh elastic for best results. Wider elastic (1 inch / 2.5 cm or more) generally needs a slightly lower ratio because it distributes tension over a larger area.
