Build an efficient capsule wardrobe.
A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of versatile, high-quality clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create a large number of outfits from a small number of pieces. The math behind a capsule wardrobe shows exactly how many outfits you can build and how to set a realistic budget.
Outfit combination formula: Outfits = Tops × Bottoms × Shoes (for basic top-bottom combinations) Outfits with Layers = Tops × Bottoms × (Layers + 1) × Shoes
The “+1” for layers accounts for the option of wearing each combo without the layer.
Worked example: 10 tops × 5 bottoms × 3 shoes = 150 basic outfit combinations Add 3 jackets/cardigans: 10 × 5 × (3+1) × 3 = 600 combinations
From just 21 pieces, you have 600 distinct looks — more than 1 unique outfit per day for nearly 2 years.
Classic capsule wardrobe piece counts (the “10×10” to “37-piece” range):
- Minimalist: 10 pieces (Project 333 approach)
- Standard: 30–40 pieces
- Extended: 50–60 pieces (includes seasonal variations)
Recommended piece breakdown (30-piece capsule):
- Tops (tees, blouses, shirts): 8–10
- Bottoms (trousers, jeans, skirts): 5–6
- Dresses/jumpsuits: 2–3
- Outerwear (coats, jackets): 3–4
- Shoes: 4–5
- Accessories: 4–5
Budget formula: Total Budget = Σ(Cost per Category × Number of Pieces) Cost per wear = Total Cost / (Outfits × Wears per Outfit per Year)
At $1,500 total for 33 pieces used 3x/week each for 5 years: Cost per wear = $1,500 / (33 × 3 × 52 × 5) = $1,500 / 25,740 = $0.06 per wear
Quality beats quantity: a $150 shirt worn 200 times costs $0.75/wear; a $30 shirt worn 10 times costs $3.00/wear.
