Two Types of Dividends
Qualified Dividends Dividends from U.S. corporations or qualifying foreign corporations, held for more than 60 days during the 121-day period around the ex-dividend date. Taxed at the favorable long-term capital gains rates: 0%, 15%, or 20%.
Ordinary (Non-Qualified) Dividends All other dividends — including REITs, money market funds, and short-held positions. Taxed at your regular income tax rates (10% – 37%).

Your taxable income (including the dividends) determines which bracket applies.
Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT)
An additional 3.8% tax applies to investment income if your MAGI exceeds:
- Single / HoH: $200,000
- Married Filing Jointly: $250,000
- Married Filing Separately: $125,000
NIIT applies to the lesser of: your net investment income, OR the amount your MAGI exceeds the threshold.
